NEW DELHI - The terms of the recently concluded India-US trade deal, including the agreed reciprocal tariff of 18% for Indian goods, are subject to change now, a government official said. This comes after the US Supreme Court struck down the reciprocal tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump.
The Trump-administration has currently imposed a blanket tariff of 10% on all goods entering the US. The White House is working on a new tariff structure after the Supreme Court ruling, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said. So New Delhi will go ahead with the trade deal after Washington finalises the new tariff structure, Agrawal added. Both sides had planned to sign the agreed trade deal in March.
Once Washington finalises its new tariff structure, India will engage with the US for terms such that Indian goods are better placed compared to the new tariff structure, the first government official said on condition of anonymity. The US has also announced unfair trade practice investigations against several nations including India, which is being seen as an alternative means to impose fresh tariffs. New Delhi aims to take care of those tariffs as well under the revised terms of the trade deal, the official said. End
