--IndiGo to levy 'fuel charge' due to jump in fuel prices amid West Asia war
NEW DELHI – Amid the onging military conflict in West Asia, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. Friday said it will introduce a fuel charge on domestic and international routes from Saturday as a sharp surge in aviation turbine fuel prices raises operating costs for the company.
The additional charge will come into effect from Saturday and will apply to all new bookings, the airline said. The airline will levy a fuel charge of INR 425 on routes within India and the Indian subcontinent. Flights to "Middle East" will attract a charge of INR 900, while routes to Southeast Asia and China and Africa and West Asia will see a surcharge of INR 1,800. Passengers travelling to Europe will be charged an additional INR 2,300, the company said.
According to the International Air Transport Association's Jet Fuel Monitor, jet fuel prices have risen by more than 85% in West Asia, significantly increasing airlines' operating costs.
Aviation turbine fuel accounts for a substantial share of airlines' operating expenses, and the surge in prices is expected to materially impact industry costs and network operations, the company said.
For the December quarter, InterGlobe Aviation reported a net profit of INR 6.13 billion on revenue of INR 234.72 billion. On Friday, shares of the company closed at INR 4,158.20 on the National Stock Exchange, down 2.2%. End
