AHMEDABAD – Wholesale sales of automobile units, that began the year on a positive note in January, continued to display similar strength in February, rising 29.8% on year to 2.30 million units, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Friday. Data showed positive sentiment in the industry continued as passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers posted their highest ever sales for February, with double digit growth across these segments, Rajesh Menon, director general of SIAM, said in a press release.
While the month of March has festive drivers in several parts of the country, the recent military conflict in West Asia remains a concern, both from the perspective of supply chain, which could impact the manufacturing processes, and exports, Menon said. The industry would keep a close watch on evolving geopolitical developments, he said.
Domestic wholesale sales of passenger vehicles rose 10.6% on year to 417,705 units in February with its production rising 9.8% on year to 443,608 units. Sales of two-wheelers for February rose 35.2% on year to 1.87 million units, while their output grew 24.4% on year to 2.31 million units.
Sales of scooters surged 42.3% on year to 729,774 units, with its production rising 30.4% on year to 789,841 units, in February. India's motorcycle sales for February increased 30.8% on year to 1.1 million units and its output rose 22.3% on year to 1.48 million units.
Companies sold 74,573 three-wheelers to dealerships in India last month, up 29% on year, while production rose 29.9% on year to 108,154 units. All the sub-segments under three-wheelers registered year-on-year growth in sales, including electric rickshaws, which saw 20.1% on-year jump to 890 units. Sales of mopeds under the two-wheelers segment rose 34.3% to 45,095 units in February.
Indian automobile companies exported 608,204 units of total vehicles in February, up 28.2% on year. This rise was aided by a 49% on-year increase in exports of three-wheelers during the month to 38,766 units. Passenger vehicle exports rose 34% on year to 75,892 units last month. Overseas despatches of motorcycles rose 22.1% on year to 422,239 units in February.
In Apr-Feb, Indian companies sold 24.55 million units of total vehicles, up 9.4% on year. They sold 4.06 million units of passenger vehicles, up 6.3% on year. During the period, sales of two-wheelers rose 9.9% on year to 19.73 million units. Sales of three-wheelers rose 12% on year to 759,958 units in Apr-Feb.
In the 11 months ended February, companies in India produced a total of 30.35 million vehicles, up 10.9% on year. This was led by a 23% rise in the output of three-wheelers during the period to 1.18 million units. Production of passenger vehicles rose 8.5% on year to 4.87 million units in Apr-Feb and that of two-wheelers grew 10.8% on year to 24.29 million units. End
