NEW DELHI – Bank credit growth picked up pace in the fortnight ended Feb. 28, having moderated in the previous fortnight. Deposit growth, too, improved in the reporting fortnight, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed.
Bank loans were up 14.5% on year as of Feb. 28, higher than the on-year growth of 13.6% as of Feb. 15. Loans were up INR 3.23 trillion from a fortnight ago at INR 207.54 trillion as of Feb. 28.
Deposits grew 11.9% on year as of Feb. 28, quicker than the 11.2% growth seen a fortnight ago. Bank deposits as of Feb. 28 were INR 251.90 trillion, up INR 4.16 trillion from a fortnight ago.
Investments by banks grew 3.1% on year to INR 69.46 trillion as of Feb. 28. They were up INR 931.30 billion from the last fortnight.
The year-ago figures for loans, deposits, and investments are for Mar. 7, 2025. The government late last year changed the definition of a reporting fortnight under the Banking Laws. Under the amended regulation, the definition of "fortnight" has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period--either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.
