MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 98.913 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for around 54% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 12% from a year ago and over 26?ove the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 9.554 billion cubic metres, which is 48.2% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 27.3% of the capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 11.386 billion cubic metres, 52.3% of the storage capacity, against 48.4% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 24.451 billion cubic metres, accounting for 64.2% of the storage capacity, as against 58.3% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 29.143 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is around 60% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 50.6% a year ago. The water level in the southern region was 24.379 billion cubic metres, 44.1% of the storage capacity, compared with 46.3% a year ago.
India received an average of 0.5 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 92% below the normal of 6.3 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
