NEW DELHI – India has criticised the attack on a commercial ship bound for Kandla, Gujarat, while it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday.

"India deplores the fact that commercial shipping is being made a target of military attacks in the ongoing conflict in West Asia," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. "Precious lives, including of Indian citizens, have already been lost in multiple such attacks in the earlier phase of this conflict and the intensity and lethality of the attacks only seems to be increasing," it said.

The ship, identified as Mayuree Naree, had departed the Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates and was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it was hit by a projectile. Later, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps claimed responsibility for the attack on Mayuree Naree and a Liberian-flagged ship.

Iranian news agency ISNA cited a statement by the country's defence force, which said that the "Israeli-owned Express Rome ship, flying the Liberian flag, and the container ship Mayuree Naree, were hit by Iranian projectiles" after they ignored the warnings of the IRGC naval forces.

Iran has enforced a soft blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after it came under attack from the US-Israel combine on Feb. 28.

"India reiterates that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or otherwise impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, should be avoided," the external affairs ministry further said.  End
