NEW DELHI – After nearly a week of unusually high temperatures, Delhi is likely to get some relief over the weekend as a western disturbance and associated weather systems bring clouds, gusty winds, and possible light rain to the region, according to private agency Skymet Weather Services. The change in weather between Saturday and Monday is expected to ease the intensity of the heat, with daytime temperatures likely to fall by around 3–4 degrees Celsius from current levels, it said.
Delhi has recorded unusually high temperatures so far this month. March opened with maximum temperatures close to 30 degrees Celsius, but the mercury quickly surged above 35 degrees Celsius and has remained persistently high over the past several days. The first week of the month was the hottest in nearly 50 years and the trend has continued through the first 10 days, with daytime temperatures staying around 7 degrees Celsius above normal, the agency said.
Missing rains in February, weak winds, and clear skies have resulted in the accumulation of heat, leading to a sharp rise in temperatures, Skymet said. A decent spell of rain was last observed around Republic Day, and weather conditions have largely remained quiet since, it added.
The change in weather will be triggered by an active western disturbance approaching the Western Himalayas around Saturday, along with an induced cyclonic circulation forming over the northern plains. Together, these systems will enhance weather activity across northern India, the agency said.
The hill states will witness the bulk of the activity, with rain and snowfall likely to continue for 5-6 days, it said. "The plains, meanwhile, are expected to witness the season's first pre-monsoon weather activity between Saturday and Sunday," it added.
Delhi will be on the fringes of this weather system, but the residual influence may still bring the first thunderstorm activity of the season, accompanied by scattered clouds and brief rain or showers, the weather agency said. The combined effect of changing winds, towering clouds, and light precipitation will help to arrest the steady rise in temperatures across the region.
Another spell of weather activity over northern India is likely around the middle of next week, which could keep temperatures from rising sharply again, according to the agency. End
