NEW DELHI – The commerce ministry's spokesperson has denied reports that the Union Cabinet, in its meeting Tuesday, had eased foreign direct investment norms for China and other nations that share a land border with India. The Cabinet did not take up the matter for discussion, the spokesperson added.

The commerce ministry's Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade of India is entrusted with decisions on India's FDI policy. Following a conflict between India and China in the Galwan valley in 2020, the department had issued a press note, popularly known as Press Note 3, which mandated government approval for FDI by entities from countries that share land borders with India.

India has got foreign direct investment of just $2.5 billion from China since 2000. Besides China, the rule also applies to Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar and Afghanistan, as they share a land border with India.  End

US$1 = INR 91.80
