NEW DELHI – Delhi has recorded unusual temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius for the past three days, making it the hottest first week of the month in 50 years, according to private weather agency Skymet. On Monday, the capital city logged 35.7 degrees Celsius, the highest since 1999. "Today, it may be a shade better but is still likely to cross the 35°C mark," it added.
Missing rains in February, weak winds, and clear skies have resulted in the accumulation of heat, leading to a sharp rise in temperatures, Skymet said. A decent spell of rain was last observed sometime around Republic Day, and it has generally remained quiet thereafter, it added.
Though weakening winds will result in normal temperature rising in the coming days, it will be balanced by the western disturbance moving across the mountains and along the foothills. "Therefore, no spike is likely in the mercury level," it added.
There are early indications of an active weather system approaching over the weekend. The western disturbance and the induced circulation together may start with the opening spell of pre-monsoon activity, Skymet said, noting it is a little early to be certain.
"Notwithstanding, the pre-monsoon may announce its arrival very soon, and changed weather conditions are expected between 14th and 20th March 2026," it added. End
