NEW DELHI – The Lok Sabha Tuesday took up for discussion the resolution to remove the Speaker, moved by the opposition. The resolution was moved in the House by Indian National Congress member Mohammed Javed, who listed out the reasons for bringing the resolution against Speaker Om Birla. It was taken up after more than 50 members lent support to it.
Congress member Gaurav Gogoi opened the discussion and pointed out how the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was not being allowed to speak in the House by the Chair.
Earlier, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi raised a point of order, objecting to Bharatiya Janata Party MP Jagdambika Pal presiding over the proceedings. Owaisi said that as per the Constitution, the House, and not the Speaker, should decide who would preside when such a resolution was being discussed. This was seconded by Congress MP K.C. Venugopal and Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy.
However, the government refused to relent on this and Jagdambika Pal continued to preside. The House has allocated time of 10 hours to discuss the motion. End
