NEW DELHI – Stocks of fast-moving consumer goods companies may emerge as a silver lining amid the volatility in the broader market owing to geopolitical uncertainties, according to analysts tracking the sector.

"During a war time scenario...demand for FMCG articles increases...If I just look purely from a technical perspective also, this sector has been beaten down...But now we're seeing some signs of a revival," said Sugandha Sachdeva, founder of equity and commodity research firm SS WealthStreet. She is, however, not bullish as a rise in crude oil prices may hurt margins of companies in the sector. Among individual stocks, Sachdeva is positive on Hindustan Unilever, ITC, and Nestle India.

The Nifty FMCG index is likely to find support around 49500 points in the near term while the 51700 to 52500 points zone could pose resistance, said Amol Athawale, vice president of technical research at Kotak Securities.

On Friday, the sectoral index ended flat at 49970.60 points with nine of the 15 constituents ending in the green. However, for the week, the index fell 2.3%. "Technically, on a weekly basis, the index has broken the medium-term support line at 50500 (points), which is largely negative and could drag the sentiment in the medium term. The ideal strategy would be to reduce long positions at each resistance level," Athawale said.

Vincent K. Andrews from Geojit Financial Services said if the war in West Asia extends beyond the expected four to five weeks, FMCG stocks may see a selloff as investors factor in the negative impact on production of FMCG companies due to supply chain disruptions and a potential rise in input prices. Crude oil and its derivatives form a key component of the cost structure for FMCG companies affecting manufacturing, packaging, and logistics. A sustained rise in oil prices could therefore translate into price hikes across several consumer goods categories.

"The current situation in the Middle East has resulted in disruptions in container movement and logistics. We are closely watching the oil prices as that would impact input costs. That said, we hope that this would be a short-term issue and may be resolved soon," Dabur India said in response to a query from Informist.

Several home-grown FMCG companies, including Dabur India, Marico, and Britannia Industries, see low-to-high single digit revenue contribution from West Asia. Prolonged tensions in the region could hurt earnings of consumer goods companies in the June quarter as a majority of the ongoing quarter is behind us, Andrews said, adding that several FMCG stocks are currently trading at attractive valuations.
