--IEX Feb electricity traded volume 12.55 bln units, up 30.4% on year

MUMBAI - Indian Energy Exchange Ltd. Thursday said that 12.55 billion units of electricity were traded in February, up 30.4% on year. A total of 1.89 million renewable energy certificates were traded in the month, up 15.2% on year. India consumed 133 billion units of energy in February, up 1.9% on year, the company said.

While the number of electricity units traded in Februrary rose, prices were lower compared to last year. Higher supply and liquidity weighed on prices, the company said. The market clearing price of electricity in February's day-ahead market was down 18% on year at INR 3.58 a unit. Prices in the real time market were down 19% on year at INR 3.59 a unit. Lower prices helped distribution companies, and commercial and industrial consumers to meet their demand at competitive prices, the company said in an exchange filing.

The company said 6.59 billion units of electricity were traded in the day-ahead market on the IEX in February, up 22.7% on year. Volumes in the real-time electricity market rose 51.7% to 4.38 billion units in the month. On the IEX green market, 808 million units were traded in February, up 46.3% on year. Meanwhile, the weighted average price in green day-ahead market declined 25.3% on year to INR 3.43 a unit.

In the day ahead contingency and term-ahead market, which covers contingency, daily, weekly, and monthly contracts up to three months, 775 million units were traded in February, down 4.7% on year.

For the December quarter, IEX reported a net profit of INR 1.15 billion on revenues of INR 1.44 billion. Shares of the company closed at INR 118.59 Wednesday, down 2.41%, on the National Stock Exchange.  End
