--Cabinet OKs renaming of Kerala to Keralam 

 

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Tuesday approved a proposal to change the name of the state Kerala to Keralam. The state's legislative assembly had passed a resolution seeking the same in June 2024.

 

"The name of our State is 'Keralam' in Malayalam Language. States were formed on the basis of language on the 1st day of November, 1956. The Kerala Piravi Day is also on the 1st day of November...This Assembly unanimously appeal to the Central Government to take urgent steps as per Article 3 of the Constitution for modifying the name as 'Keralam'," according to the resolution.

 

The president will refer a Bill, namely the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to the Kerala Legislative Assembly to seek its views. After the assembly conveys its opinion, the central government will proceed further and obtain the president's recommendation to introduce the bill in parliament to change the state's name from Kerala to Keralam.

 

Article 3 of the Constitution empowers parliament to alter the names of existing states. The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Law and Justice have concurred with the proposal to change the name of the state from Kerala to Keralam.  End
