MUMBAI - The Nifty 50 ended higher Monday after falling for two sessions, supported by gains in energy stocks and shares of select private-sector banks. The BSE Sensex closed higher after three days. Meanwhile, some information technology majors ended lower, extending their fall for the fourth session. The rise in the equity market was also capped by a sharp fall in capital market companies after the Reserve Bank of India mandated that banks can lend to capital market intermediaries, such as brokers, only on a fully secured basis.
Shares of several banks ended higher. Nifty 50 heavyweight HDFC Bank closed 2.4% higher. The Reserve Bank of India finalised new norms permitting banks to provide acquisition financing for mergers and acquisitions from the financial year 2026–27 (Apr-Mar). Formalising the participation of banks in large merger and acquisition transactions is a structural positive for the sector, ICICI Securities said. Brokerages also said the introduction of acquisition financing norms opens a new fee and credit-growth area. Shares of Axis Bank ended 2% higher and those of other lenders such as Canara Bank, Bank of India, and Union Bank of India closed 2–3% higher. Bucking the broader rally in banking stocks, ICICI Bank ended slightly in the red, but well above the day's low.
The Nifty 50 settled 0.8% higher at 25682.75 points. The BSE Sensex ended at 83277.15 points, also up 0.8%. While the Nifty 50's movement was mostly range-bound in early trading, the 50-stock index was able to break through its immediate resistance level at 25500–25600 points. Shares of state-owned power companies such as Power Grid Corp. of India, Coal India, and NTPC ended 2-5% higher. Morgan Stanley raised its target price for Coal India by over 5% to INR 410.
Wipro and Tech Mahindra closed 1.4% and 0.4% lower and were among the worst hit constituents in the Nifty 50 index. Infosys closed 0.3% lower. However, the Nifty IT index snapped a three-session losing run to close slightly higher. While some other IT players ended in the red, the severity of the drop was not as sharp as in previous sessions. The Nifty IT index has dropped over 14% in the past two weeks, in the wake of the global rout of traditional software companies which face a possible earnings hit from artificial intelligence tools.
A fall in automobile stocks also put pressure on the headline indices. Bajaj Auto, Eicher Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Maruti Suzuki India ended around 0.6-1.2% lower. The Nifty Auto sectoral index ended 0.7% lower, hurt by a fall of around 2% in Uno Minda and Hero MotoCorp.
Shares of exchanges and capital market companies also fell after the Reserve Bank of India Friday tightened the norms for lending by banks to capital market intermediaries from Apr. 1. BSE closed 7% lower and Billionbrains Garage Ventures ended over 1.5% lower. Angel One and Nuvama Wealth Management closed nearly 5% and 1% lower, respectively.
Now, all credit facilities to capital market companies need to be backed by collateral and will be subject to stricter norms. Under the revised norms, banks can extend credit to Securities and Exchange Board of India-regulated brokers and intermediaries only on a fully secured basis, with a minimum 40% haircut on equity shares used as collateral. Funding for margin trading facilities must carry at least 50% cash collateral. Among retail brokers, Angel One is expected to reassess funding for its margin trading facility book and Billionbrains Garage Ventures is likely to come to the market again as its margin trading facility book is scaled up aggressively, JM Financial Institutional Securities said.
Shares of Ola Electric Mobility closed 7% lower after the company reported its earnings for the December quarter Friday. Emkay Global Financial Services downgraded the stock to "sell" from "buy" and cut the target price by 60%. Ola Electric has seen its market share fall consistently and attempts to revitalise its presence in the electric two-wheeler segment will be a long process, the brokerage said. Shares of Natco Pharma ended 7% higher after the company Saturday said it had received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation to manufacture and market generic semaglutide injection in India.
Meanwhile, shares of Brainbees Solutions ended over 11% lower after the company Friday reported a consolidated net loss of INR 284.34 million for the December quarter, an almost fourfold increase from the loss a year ago.
Investors also reacted to stocks of several other companies that released their December quarter earnings over the weekend. Shares of GMR Airports ended 7% higher after the company reported a consolidated net profit for the December quarter after three quarters of losses. A tariff revision at the Delhi airport, strong growth in the non-aero segments, and profitability turnaround at the Goa airport drove earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation growth, according to JM Financial. RHI Magnesita India ended nearly 6% higher after the company's December quarter net profit rose 23% on year.
Shares of Fractal Analytics ended nearly 6% lower after the company listed at a 3% discount on the NSE at INR 876. Shares of Aye Finance listed at the issue price of INR 129 a share on the NSE and ended marginally lower. Shares of Kwality Wall's (India) listed at INR 29.80 on the NSE and ended at INR 29.42, sharply below its indicative listing price of INR 40.20 per share.
