NEW DELHI – Shares of capital goods companies are likely to move in a range next week as the December quarter results have been weaker than expected, but hopes of higher spending by the government and private players may limit any fall. High stock valuations are likely to limit any gains for capital goods stocks.
For the December quarter, 15 capital goods companies in the Nifty 200 index reported a year-on-year rise of 12% in their cumulative net profit, lower than analysts' expectations of 35% growth. Sales of the same batch of companies was up 16%, slightly slower than expectations of a rise of 18%.
Analysts are positive about the increase in capital expenditure by the government in the Budget for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). The Budget has pegged the FY27 capital expenditure at INR 12.21 trillion, up 11.5% from the revised estimate of INR 10.96 trillion for FY26.
The capex is 3.1% of GDP, which is positive as there were some concerns that the government may bring it down to 3% of GDP or even lower. However, the government chose instead to slow the pace of fiscal consolidation with the fiscal deficit in FY27 seen at 4.3% of GDP as compared with the estimated 4.4% in FY26.
