MUMBAI– The Jharkhand government has issued a demand notice seeking INR 9.29 billion in compensation from Hindustan Copper Ltd. for alleged unauthorised production from the Surda mine between 2000-01 (Apr-Mar) and FY17.

The Office of the District Mining Officer, East Singhbhum, Jamshedpur, under the department of Mines and Geology, has sought recovery of the amount under Section 21(5) of the Mines and Minerals Act, 1957, the company said in an exchange filing.

The notice, dated Feb. 12, alleges that the company undertook production without valid statutory clearances or in excess of permissible limits during the period. The demand has been raised in line with the Supreme Court's judgement in the common cause matter, the filing said.
