MUMBAI – Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. reported a marginal on year rise in its bottom line for the December quarter due to an on-year fall in revenue. This was the first on-year rise in the company's bottom line in five quarters. ONGC's net profit surpassed the estimate by analysts.
The state-owned company's December quarter net profit was INR 83.72 billion, up nearly 2% on year, higher than analysts' estimate of INR 71.46 billion. ONGC's revenue from operations was INR 315.47 billion, down over 6% from the year-ago quarter. The company's top line was in line with analysts' estimate.
The company has also announced an interim dividend of INR 6.25 per share with the record date of Feb. 18.
The company's total income was INR 346.40 billion for the December quarter, down over 2% on year. However, its other income improved on year to INR 30.94 billion, up nearly 80% from the year-ago quarter.
On the segment, ONGC's offshore revenue from operations was INR 220.81 billion, down nearly 7% on year, for the December quarter. With this, the profit before tax and interest from the offshore segment was INR 83.12 billion, down over 13% on year. Its onshore revenue from operations was INR 94.65 billion, down 6% from the year-ago quarter. With this, the company's profit from the onshore segment was INR 12.08 billion, down nearly 27% on year.
ONGC is primarily engaged in exploration and production of crude oil, natural gas, and some value-added products.
The company's crude oil price realisation from the nominated category of fields was $61.63 per barrel, down over 15% on year, while for the joint venture category, crude price realisation was $63 per barrel for the December quarter, down over 13% on year. The company's December quarter gas price realisation under the nominated category was $6.59 per million British thermal units, up over 1%. The price realisation from new gas wells was $8 per million British thermal units, down over 10% on year.
The company's operating margin was 37.26% during the quarter, up from 35.81% in the year-ago quarter, mainly on account of a fall in price realisations.
For the nine month period ended December, the company's net profit was INR 262.44 billion, down 10% from the year-ago period. ONGC's revenue was INR 965.80 billion for Apr-Dec, down over 6% from the year-ago period.
Thursday, shares of ONGC ended INR 276.35 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up nearly 1%. The company announced its December quarter results post market hours. End
