NEW DELHI – The Indian automobile industry will invest in electric charging infrastructure in areas where long-term use cases and cost-recovery models are clear to further advance the adoption of electric vehicles, Shailesh Chandra, president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, said at the fifth Global Electrification Mobility Summit on Tuesday. "Public charging networks across highways, cities, and rural corridors must be ubiquitous and reliable," Chandra, who is also the managing director and chief executive officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., said.

Chandra called on the automobile industry to invest more in the research and development of electric vehicles to reduce costs and deliver technologically advanced, affordable products. While adoption of electric vehicles in India has picked up momentum in recent years, Chandra said the most important challenge is to scale adoption across segments. Two-wheelers and three-wheelers have seen higher adoption of electric variants than passenger and commercial vehicles.

Going forward, India should address energy sustainability, expand renewable energy capacity, develop skills, and harness export potential as part of the next phase of boosting the adoption of electric vehicles, Chandra said.

Out of the 2.25 million vehicles registered in India last year, over 8% were electric vehicles. While automobile companies increase production of electric vehicles, Chandra noted that industrial ecosystems are evolving alongside these products.

"Suppliers, component manufacturers, battery developers, and software innovators are all part of a deepening strategy," Chandra said. "This ecosystem approach is vital because electrification extends beyond vehicle assembly and it is also about localisation of critical components, sharing technology platforms, and co-creating solutions that are globally competitive," he added.  End
