MUMBAI – The positive momentum of automobile stocks is expected to continue next week, after getting a boost from the announcement of the long-awaited India-US trade deal with US President Donald Trump reducing the reciprocal tariff on Indian exports to the US to 18% from 25%. Expectations of a stronger December-quarter earnings amid sustained retail demand post the festival season and full pass-through of the cut in the goods and services tax are also seen supporting the positive momentum, analysts said.
In January, the sector saw wholesale sales benefiting from the lower goods and services tax, festivals, marriage season, rural traction from robust rabi acreage and near completion of a good kharif harvest, discounts on 2025 models, and reduced interest rates, broking firm Prabhudas Lilladher said in a report Tuesday. Expectations of future price hikes by automakers also led to some pre-buying in the month, the brokerage said.
This week, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Hyundai Motor India, Hero MotoCorp, and Bosch announced their December quarter earnings. Hero MotoCorp reported a better-than-expected top line for the December quarter driven by a boost from the festive season and new model launches, but its bottom line fell short of what analysts had expected, dented by a one-time cost of INR 1.19 billion. Similarly, Hyundai Motor India managed to meet the Street's view for its top line but failed to meet the expectations for its bottom line, which was impacted by a rapid rise in commodity prices.
Meanwhile, the December quarter earnings of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles came under pressure from the lingering impact of the cybersecurity attack at its UK-based subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover in August. The Sierra maker reported a consolidated net loss of INR 34.86 billion for the quarter, against a net profit of INR 54.06 billion in the year-ago quarter. Its top line fell 26% on year and 3.1% on quarter to INR 701.08 billion. With the continuing pressure from input costs, especially prices of noble metals, the company said it expects to raise prices of its cars in the coming weeks.
Next week, Eicher Motors, Samvardhana Motherson International, ZF Commercial Vehicle Control Systems India, Popular Vehicles and Services, Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, Bharat Forge, and Endurance Technologies will announce their December quarter earnings.
This week, the Nifty Auto index closed nearly 3% higher on a weekly basis after closing in the red for four consecutive weeks. The sectoral index has witnessed a decisive breakaway gap, flipping its earlier bearish chart structure on the back of the India–US trade deal, said Vatsal Bhuva, technical and derivatives analyst at LKP Securities. "The trade deal acted as the much-needed trigger for the index to emerge from its corrective phase," Bhuva said.
The sectoral index has reclaimed its 20-day moving average and is now consolidating above its breakout zone, indicating improving price stability, Bhuva said. The momentum indicators further support the move, with Relative Strength Index confirming a positive divergence, he added.
On Friday, the Nifty Auto index closed at 27519.55 points, down 144.95 points or 0.5% from the previous close. Next week, the index is seen finding support at 27200 levels and immediate resistance is placed at 27650 and positional resistance at 28000, Bhuva said.
