MUMBAI – The Nifty Pharma index is expected to remain range-bound next week as the market awaits details on the recently announced India-US trade deal agreement, under which the US has brought down tariffs on India to 18% from the current 50%. Pharmaceutical exports to the US are currently exempted, but more details on the trade deal are required to assess its impact on the Indian pharmaceutical players, according to analysts.
The December quarter earnings of Sun Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and Cipla were disappointing as most companies reported weak sales in their generics segment. The results induced caution among market participants, who will closely watch earnings of other drugmakers for cues.
However, the recent data from IQVIA may lend some positive cues to investors. Data from IQVIA shows that Sun Pharma's specialty segment is doing well, with a growth of 9.5% in the three months ended December. The company's key products such as Ilumya and Odomzo are performing well, and they're gaining market share. However, its generics segment faces challenges, especially with the US Food and Drug Administration's inspection at the Baska injectable site, which might impact the company's US generics business in the short term.
Dr. Reddy's is maintaining its market share in some key generic products, but it is facing tough competition in products like Iron Sucrose and Octreotide LAR. Cipla's Albuterol market share is slightly down, and it is facing increased competition in Abraxane.
The Nifty Pharma index is likely to find support around 21200 points and the resistance for the index is pegged at 22150 levels, according to a technical analyst. For the week ended Friday, the Nifty Pharma index ended over 1% higher at 21961.35 points. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries was the biggest gainer during the week, rising over 6% at INR 1,695.10, followed by Piramal Pharma, which rose nearly 3% at INR 158.75. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals ended lower by a little over 4% at INR 1,934.80, and IPCA Laboratories fell nearly 4% to close at INR 1,416.70, on the National Stock Exchange.
