MUMBAI– Bharti Hexacom Ltd.'s net profit for the December quarter rose sharply from a year ago as the company was able to contain expenses and because of a fall in finance costs, even as the revenue grew only in low single digits. The bottom line for the quarter was slightly higher than Street's estimates.
The company's net profit rose over 81% on year and nearly 13% sequentially to INR 4.74 billion. The Street had estimated the bottom line at INR 4.58 billion. Its revenue for the quarter was INR 23.60 billion, up nearly 5% on year and nearly 2% on quarter. This was slightly lower than the INR 23.78 billion estimated by the Street.
The company's total expenditure for the quarter was INR 11.05 billion, largely unchanged on year but down marginally on quarter. Its network operating expenses, which are 50% of the total expenses, were INR 5.22 billion, up 7.5% on year. The company's depreciation and amortisation expenses for the quarter were INR 5.67 billion, up nearly 7% on year.
Access charges were INR 1.77 billion, down 23% on year but up nearly 6% on quarter. The company's finance cost for the December quarter was INR 1.47 billion, down 18% on year and nearly 3% on quarter. The company's exceptional cost fell to INR 91 million from INR 1.05 billion a year ago.
Bharti Hexacom is a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel Ltd. It provides consumer mobile services, fixed line telephone, and broadband services in Rajasthan and the north-eastern states, including Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The company's overall earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation for the December quarter rose 2% on quarter to INR 12.82 billion. The EBITDA margin was 54.3% as against 54.2% in the trailing quarter. Its earnings before interest and tax for the quarter grew 1.9% on quarter to INR 7.15 billion. The EBIT margin for the quarter was 30.3%, unchanged sequentially.
The company's mobile average revenue per user improved to INR 253 in the reporting quarter from INR 241 in the trailing quarter, alongside an increase in data consumption. The company's mobile services customer base increased by nearly 3% on year and up slightly on quarter to 28.40 million as on Dec. 31. The company added 43 mobile services network towers on quarter. Total mobile broadband base stations were 93,472, up from 92,455 in the previous quarter.
In the home services segment, the company added a record 73,000 customers in Oct-Dec, up nearly 22% sequentially. The company's home services are covered in 117 cities, unchanged from the previous quarter.
For the nine months ended December, the company reported a net profit of INR 12.86 billion, up 25% on year. Its revenue for the same period grew nearly 11% on year to INR 69.40 billion.
Bharti Hexacom announced its December quarter earnings post-market hours on Thursday. Ahead of the earnings, the company's shares closed 1% higher at INR 1,627.40 on the National Stock Exchange. End
