MUMBAI – The domestic passenger vehicle wholesale sales of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. in January barely grew year-on-year as the festive momentum seemingly tapered off, an exchange filing by the company showed Monday. However, a rapid surge in exports during the month helped the company register a double-digit growth in overall sales in January for the third consecutive month.

 

Maruti Suzuki sold 174,529 passenger vehicles in India in January, up 0.5% on year and down 2.3% on month. Within this segment, the company sold 14,268 mini cars, largely flat on year and on month. Mini cars in Maruti Suzuki's portfolio include the Alto and S-Presso.

 

Sales of compact cars disappointed in January, snapping a year-on-year growth streak seen for six straight months. Their sales fell 12% on year and 8% on month to 72,738 units in January. Models in this segment include Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR. Overall, passenger car sales, which include sales of mini, compact, and mid-size cars, fell almost 11% on year and 6% on month to 87,006 units in January.

 

Utility vehicles fared much better than its smaller counterparts, as wholesale sales grew 16% on year and 2.4% on month to 75,609 units in January. Utility vehicle models in Maruti Suzuki's stable include Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris, and XL6.  

 

Sales of its Eeco van grew 5.9% on year but remained flat on month in January, at 11,914 units. The company sold 3,771 commercial vehicles in January, down 8% on year but up 7% on month. Overall, sales by Maruti Suzuki in India in January were 178,300 units, barely up on year but down 2% on month.

 

Sales to other original equipment manufacturers by Maruti Suzuzki remained largely unchanged on year at 7,643 units. These are vehicles manufactured by Maruti Suzuki which are sold to another automobile company, specifically Toyota, to be rebranded and sold under the latter's brand name.

 

Including sales to other companies, sales of commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles, domestic sales by Maruti Suzuki in India in January grew 0.4% on year but fell 3% on month to 185,943 units.

 

The company exported 51,020 units in January, up 88% on year and 98% on month. Overall, its wholesale sales in January grew 12% on year and 9% on month to 236,963 units. 

 

At 1026 IST, shares of Maruti Suzuki traded marginally lower at INR 14,180 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
