MUMBAI – Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. reported a single-digit on-year growth in net profit for the first time in six quarters as a rise in total expenses exceeded increase in total revenue for the December quarter. In the last five quarters, the company's consolidated net profit had grown in double digits.

 

The total expenses for the quarter rose over 18% on year to INR 18.47 billion, while its total revenue from operations rose over 15% on year to INR 21.88 billion. Sequentially, the revenue rose nearly 34%.


The company's standalone net profit for the December quarter was INR 3.54 billion, up nearly 7% from INR 3.32 billion in the year-ago quarter. Sequentially, the net profit increased over 16%.

Cost of materials consumed rose nearly 25% on year in the December quarter, excise duty increased about 19%, employee benefit expenses rose over 36%, and finance costs rose nearly 7% during the quarter. The company's total other income rose nearly 11% to INR 1.08 billion for the reporting quarter.


The company's revenue from cigarettes, tobacco and related products segment rose over 15% to INR 21.59 billion, from INR 18.75 billion.

The company said it expects to fully recover the loss of INR 2.84 billion from a fire at a third-party-operated tobacco processing plant and inventory warehouse in Andhra Pradesh on Oct. 10 under the insurance claim.

 

The company said the impact of the new labour code is not material. The company's net profit for Apr-Dec was INR 10.23 billion and total revenue from operations was INR 56.28 billion. The net profit rose nearly 28% on year and revenue grew nearly 16% on year.

 

The company announced its results after market hours. On Friday, shares of Godfrey Phillips closed 0.5% higher at INR 2,035.50 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
