HYDERABAD – InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., which operates the airline IndiGo, expects to operate 4,000 flights daily by 2030, up from 2,700 in 2025, Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers said Wednesday. Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of Wings India 2026, a bi-annual aviation industry event, he said the company is targeting the delivery of nine A321XLR aircraft in 2026 as part of its strategy to fly to more international destinations.

The company expects the total number of passengers flying IndiGo to touch 200 million by 2030, compared with 124 million in 2025. Referring to the disruptions caused in December, Elbers said the company had learned a lesson from the developments that unfolded during the crisis.

In December, IndiGo faced widespread flight disruptions across India due to crew shortages and scheduling constraints following the implementation of stricter pilot duty and rest norms. "We have let them (passengers) down," Elbers said, adding that the company is working hard to rebuild customer trust.

The chief executive officer admitted the disruptions cost the company a lot in terms of reputation. However, he said IndiGo's integrity cannot be measured by two or three days of disruption and the airline has a long history of quality service.

The airline was forced to cancel or delay a large number of flights as it struggled to align its duty rosters with the new regulations, leading to passenger inconvenience and regulatory scrutiny. IndiGo gradually stabilised operations later in the month after adjusting schedules and crew deployment.

Responding to a volley of questions on the crisis, Elbers said the disruption was a compounded effect of multiple issues. After an initial probe, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had imposed a fine of INR 222 million on the company. Elbers declined to comment on the regulatory action but said the company is engaging with all regulatory authorities on a regular basis.

Elbers also said IndiGo is in talks with other international operators to expand its reach to new destinations. With the addition of the new A321XLR aircraft, these partnerships may expand further, he said. By 2030, he added, 40% of the airline's network will be international routes.

Wednesday, InterGlobe Aviation shares ended slightly lower at INR 4,749 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
