NEW DELHI – Tata Power Co. Ltd. Friday said the World Bank group has approved and sanctioned a long-term finance package of $815 million for its 1,125 megawatt Dorjilung Hydropower Project in Bhutan. The Dorjilung Hydropower Project is a special-purpose vehicle in which Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corp. holds a 60% stake and Tata Power owns the remaining 40%. The project, the largest hydropower project under the public-private partnership model in Bhutan, is expected to generate over 4,500 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.
"This will expand Bhutan's installed energy capacity by nearly 40% and further strengthen the country's position as a reliable exporter of clean energy to India," Tata Power said in an exchange filing while adding that around 80% of the annual electricity generation from the project will be supplied to India. Tata Power's wholly owned arm, Tata Power Trading Corp. Ltd., will import the power into India and manage onward distribution.
The World Bank package includes a $150 million grant and a $150 million credit from the International Development Association, and a $15 million enclave loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, to the government of Bhutan. Additionally, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development will provide an enclave loan of $200 million and the International Finance Corp. will provide a $300 million loan to the special purpose vehicle. The balance funding is expected to be provided by market participants.
For the September quarter, Tata Power had reported consolidated net profit of INR 9.19 billion on revenue of INR 155.45 billion. Friday, the company's shares closed 2.3% lower on the National Stock Exchange at INR 345.25. End
