MUMBAI – Despite a fall in revenue, Gujarat Gas Ltd. reported healthy growth in its net profit for the December quarter. The company's bottom line grew at the highest pace in six quarters but missed Street's expectations marginally. Its top line fell for the fourth consecutive quarter.

Gujarat Gas reported a net profit of INR 2.66 billion for the December quarter, up around 20% on year but down over 5% sequentially. Analysts had expected the company to post a net profit of INR 2.76 billion. Its revenue from operations, including excise duty of INR 2.07 billion, fell around 11% on year to INR 38.65 billion.

Excluding the excise duty, the company reported a revenue of INR 36.58 billion, still below analysts' expectations of INR 36.83 billion.

The company managed to report a rise in net profit despite a fall in revenue as its total expenses for the quarter fell at a faster pace than the revenue. The company incurred a total expenditure of INR 35.62 billion, almost 13% lower than the INR 40.91 billion incurred in the year-ago quarter.

The fall in total expenses was largely because of lower cost of materials consumed or purchase of stock-in-trade than the previous year. The company's input cost for the December quarter fell over 16% on year to INR 28.65 billion. It accounted for 80% of the total expenditure. For the quarter, the company reported a 14% rise in its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation to INR 5.02 billion.

Gujarat Gas achieved a compressed natural gas volume of 3.45 million standard cubic metres per day during the quarter, up 11% on year. Sales volume of domestic piped natural gas rose 11% on year and commercial piped natural gas rose 8% on year. "The CNG (compressed natural gas) category continues to witness strong momentum in terms of volume, registering a 11% rise QoQ, backed by a network of 833 CNG Stations," the company said in a press release. During the quarter, the company added over 38,600 new domestic customers and provided natural gas to more than 2.38 million households, higher than 2.34 million households in the September quarter.

For the nine months ended December, the company's net profit rose nearly 2% on year to INR 8.73 billion, while revenue fell almost 8% to INR 119.09 billion. The company reported its results during market hours, following which the stock extended its fall. From a fall of 1.4?fore the results, the shares closed nearly 3% lower at INR 394.55 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
