MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices ended lower Monday, dragged down by the fall in index heavyweights. The Nifty 50 index closed below 26000 for the seventh straight session. The sharp fall in index heavyweights Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank dragged the Nifty 50 lower after it had gained on Friday.
The Nifty 50 index closed at 25585.50, down 108.85 points or 0.4%. More than half of the 50-stock constituents ended lower. The BSE Sensex settled at 83246.18 points, down 324.17 points or 0.4%.
In the broader market, all the indices ended in the negative territory. The small-cap indices closed around 1% lower, while the mid-cap indices closed 0.3–0.4% lower. Barring the Nifty Auto and the Nifty FMCG, all other sectoral indices closed lower.
Wipro was the worst hit among the 50-stock index constituents, closing 8% lower. The company disappointed the Street with its December-quarter earnings and weaker-than-expected March-quarter guidance. Many brokerages expect the Jan-Mar margin to be diluted by the Harman DTS acquisition and the ramp-up of large deal wins.
Reliance Industries ended the session 3% lower after the company missed its consolidated net profit estimate for the December quarter. Reliance Industries reported a consolidated net profit of INR 186.45 billion for the December quarter, falling short of the Street's expectation of INR 196.63 billion profit. Its consolidated revenue for the latest quarter was INR 2.695 trillion, up over 10% on year and beating expectations of INR 2.52 trillion.
ICICI Bank ended the session over 2% lower after the bank's net profit for the December quarter missed estimates due to a hit from an unexpected Reserve Bank of India-mandated provision of INR 12.80 billion and a one-time provision of INR 1.50 billion towards new labour codes. ICICI Bank's net profit for the quarter fell 4% on year and 8% sequentially to INR 113.18 billion.
Shares of HDFC Bank closed marginally lower despite the bank reporting 11.5% on-year growth in net profit for the December quarter at INR 186.54 billion, surpassing analysts' estimate of INR 183.96 billion. However, the bottom line was largely flat compared to the net profit of INR 186.41 billion in the September quarter. The bank's management has guided for a credit-to-deposit ratio of 90–96% in 2025–26 (Apr-Mar) and 85–90% by the end of FY27.
Information technology player Tech Mahindra ended almost 3% higher after delivering its strongest-ever quarterly performance in the December quarter and securing the highest number of deal wins in five years, on the back of a firmer demand environment. The company reported a 6% sequential fall, but a 14% on-year rise in its net profit to INR 11.22 billion for the December quarter. The sequential decline was largely due to a one-time cost of INR 2.72 billion to implement the mandates under the new labour codes. The company's top line rose 3% on quarter and 8% on year to INR 143.93 billion for the latest quarter.
Bharat Coking Coal, which debuted on the bourses Monday, ended over 76% higher. Shares of the company were listed on the National Stock Exchange at INR 45, a 96% premium to the issue price of INR 23.
