MUMBAI – The Nifty 50 index closed higher Friday after moving in a thin range. However, both the benchmark indices came off the day's highs during the second half of the session. Major information technology stocks such as Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro occupied the top three positions in the 50-stock index. Gains in the index heavyweight HDFC Bank also supported the 50-stock index to close higher.

The Nifty 50 index snapped a two-day losing run, closing at 25694.35 points, up 28.75 points or 0.1%. The index closed below 26000 points for the sixth straight session, and 28 of its constituents ended lower. The BSE Sensex settled at 83570.35 points, up 187.64 points or 0.2%. "Short term chart structure is negative by the time Nifty index is trading below 25950-26000 spot zone on closing basis," said Vipin Kumaar, assistant vice president of equity research at Globe Capital Market. "On the downside, we anticipate it to come down to 25200 spot levels in the near term," he said.

In the broader market, small-cap peers of the benchmark indices underperformed, closing lower at 0.2-0.5%. However, all the mid-cap indices closed in the green for the second straight session. Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty IT gained the most, up over 3% at 39086.65

Tech Mahindra closed the session over 5% higher. After market hours, the company reported its December quarter consolidated net profit at INR 11.22 billion, down over 6% on quarter. Its consolidated revenue for the quarter was reported at INR 143.93 billion, up almost 3% on quarter.

Wipro ended almost 3% higher ahead of its quarter earnings. Post-market hours, the company reported a near 4% fall in its consolidated net profit for the December quarter at INR 31.19 billion. Its consolidated revenue was at INR 235.56 billion, up nearly 4% sequentially.

Infosys ended the session nearly 6% higher and was the top gainer among the Nifty 50 constituents. Most brokerages retained their respective 'buy' rating on the stock and kept their target prices unchanged. They are bullish on the company's positive outlook for the coming financial year and see a raise in guidance worthwhile.

Zen Technologies ended over 8% higher after receiving an INR-4.04-billion order from the Ministry of Defence. The order includes supplying anti-drone systems and counter-unmanned aerial systems worth INR 3.32 billion and training simulators and equipment worth INR 720 million.

Shares of Shriram Finance closed over 1% higher after the company said its board will mull raising funds through debt securities on Jan. 23. This may include redeemable non-convertible debentures, or bonds, on a private placement basis or public issue. Thursday, international ratings agency S&P Global Ratings upgraded its long-term credit rating on the finance company to 'BBB-' from 'BB+' with a 'stable' outlook. It also raised the short-term credit rating on the company to 'A-3' from 'B'. S&P also upgraded the rating on the company's senior secured debt to 'BBB-' from 'BB+'.

Shares of 360 ONE WAM settled over 4% higher after the asset management company reported a 51% on-year surge in its revenue for the December quarter. This was the highest growth in the company's top line in five quarters.

Reliance Industries ended marginally lower ahead of its December quarter earnings due later in the day. The company is expected to report an over 6% on-year rise in its consolidated net profit at nearly INR 197 billion for the December quarter and its consolidated top line is estimated to rise 5% on year to INR 2.5 trillion for the quarter.

Shares of Cipla ended nearly 3% lower and was among the major drags in the Nifty 50. Shares of the company fell after production of one of its key drugs, Lanreotide injection, was paused by its supply partner Pharmathen International. Nuvama Institutional Equities expects the pause in production of the Lanreotide drug, more competition in the US market for its generic Advair drug, and the expiry of its exclusivity for the generic Revlimid to pose an earnings risk for Cipla in FY27.

Eternal was the worst hit among the Nifty 50 constituents, down almost 4%. It snapped a six-day winning streak, which gained over 7% during this period.
