MUMBAI – The benchmark indices ended lower Tuesday after a volatile trading session. The Nifty 50 fell as much as 200 points at one point before recovering partially. Analysts said uncertainty regarding India-US trade deal talks led to the volatility. Fall in index heavyweight Reliance Industries also weighed on the Nifty 50.
The Nifty 50 settled 0.2% lower at 25732.30 points after falling close to 25600 points during the session. The BSE Sensex closed at 83627.69 points, down 250.48 points or 0.3%. Most of the Nifty 50 constituents ended lower. Only 19 stocks closed in the positive territory. India VIX, the fear gauge of the market, ended 1.5% lower at 11.1975. The VIX index ended lower after rising 14% in the previous three sessions.
The Nifty 50 failed to build on the gains made Monday, when the benchmark indices had snapped a five-day losing streak on optimism over India-US trade deal talks. US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, had said they will take a call on a trade deal Tuesday. However, a commerce ministry official Monday said there were no trade talks scheduled with the US this week. There has been no communication from Washington regarding discussions on the trade deal, the official said.
In the broader market, all the small-cap indices ended around 1% higher while all the mid-cap indices ended 0.1-0.3% lower. Most sectoral indices closed lower, with the Nifty Infrastructure down over 1% at 9226.55 points.
Among individual stocks, Trent was the worst hit in the 50-stock index. It was down 3.3%. Larsen and Toubro was also down 3.3%. The stock fell after media reports said that Kuwait was discussing plans to cancel oil project tenders worth $8.7 billion and the company was the lowest bidder for some tenders. However, the company issued a clarification saying that the tenders are not yet part of the company's order book.
Pharmaceutical companies such as Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Cipla ended 1–2% lower. The Nifty Pharma index closed 0.5% lower. It was down for the fourth straight session. It had shed over 3% during this period.
Shares of HCL Technologies ended marginally lower after its net profit for the December quarter fell nearly 4% on quarter and 11% on year to INR 40.76 billion, below expectations of INR 47.49 billion by analysts. The company Monday cut the upper end of its sales growth guidance for the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) to 4.5% from 5.0?rlier. Three brokerages have downgraded HCL Tech as they believe the stock has rallied over the past three months and the cut in the company's sales guidance indicates a weaker March quarter will weigh on the stock.
Shares of Tata Consultancy Services closed higher for the third straight session, ending almost 1% higher. Most broking firms have retained their rating on TCS after the company announced its December quarter earnings on Monday after the market hours. Some brokerages have raised their target price for the stock while some others have kept it unchanged. TCS reported a consolidated net profit of INR 106.57 billion for Oct-Dec, down 12% sequentially. The fall in the company's bottom line was due to one-time cost of INR 33.91 billion from the trailing quarter.
Among the banking and financial services stocks, Bank of Maharashtra and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. ended higher. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. posted an on-year decline in net premium income to INR 118.09 billion for the December quarter, down nearly 4%. Bank of Maharashtra's net profit for the quarter increased over 26% on year to INR 17.79 billion. Systematix Institutional Equities had estimated the bank's net profit for the December quarter at INR 16.33 billion.
