MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices ended lower Friday, with the Nifty 50 slipping below 25700 points after almost two months. The 50-stock index closed in the red for the fifth session in a row, falling over 2% during this period. Friday's fall, however, was not as sharp as that on Thursday when the index recorded its steepest one-day decline in more than four months.

The Nifty 50 settled at 25683.30 points, down 193.55 points or 0.8%. The BSE Sensex closed at 83576.24 points, down 604.72 points or 0.7%. Only 13 of the Nifty 50 index constituents ended higher while nine stocks in the Sensex closed in positive territory.

Financial services and banking stocks were the major drag on the Nifty 50. Heavyweight ICICI Bank ended over 2% lower, snapping a five-day winning run during which period it rose over 7%. Jio Financial Services ended over 2% lower, down for the second session. Shriram Finance fell for the sixth session. The stock has shed over 4% in this period. Friday, shares of Shriram Finance ended nearly 2% lower.

In the broader market, all the small-cap indices closed almost 2% lower and all the mid-cap indices ended almost 1% lower. Barring the Nifty Oil & Gas, the Nifty IT, and the Nifty PSU Bank, all sectoral indices ended 0.3-2.3% lower. India Volatility Index, the market's fear gauge, ended 3% higher at 10.9250.

Elecon Engineering Co. closed nearly 16% lower after the company's consolidated net profit fell over 33% on year to INR 719.90 million for the December quarter. The company's revenue from operations rose 4.3% to INR 5.52 billion. The stock was down for the second session. It has shed over 18% in these two days.

Shares of Hitachi Energy India closed over 3% lower at INR 17,861.60 after falling to an over-two-month low of INR 17,185. The fall in the stock price came amid reports that the government may allow Chinese companies to bid for government contracts, particularly in infrastructure, power, and manufacturing. Traders sold call options at multiple strikes while adding new out-of-the-money put contracts. The stock has shed nearly 9% in two days.

Shares of Vodafone Idea fell 2?spite a sharp rise in early trade after the company said it received a communication from the Department of Telecommunications, directing it to pay the pending statutory dues linked to adjusted gross revenue. The department has asked the company to pay a maximum of INR 1.24 billion annually over six years starting March and ending March 2031. The company has also been asked to pay INR 1 billion annually from March 2032 to March 2035. The remaining dues are to be paid in equal instalments every year thereafter till March 2041 after a committee, to be set by the department, reassesses the dues.

Indian Hotels Co. ended nearly 2% lower at INR 693.10 after hitting a near-two-month low of INR 690.50. Global brokerage J.P. Morgan trimmed its earnings forecast for the company by 1-3% for the period from the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) to FY28 ahead of its December quarter earnings, NDTV Profit reported. The stock closed lower for the fifth session in a row.

Bharat Heavy Electricals closed almost 1% higher at INR 274.25 after its joint venture with Coal India Thursday received an order worth INR 54 billion for a coal gasification plant in Odisha. Additionally, brokerage UBS initiated coverage on the stock with a "buy" recommendation and a target price of INR 375.

Shares of Eternal ended marginally higher following a report by The Economic Times that global brokerage Goldman Sachs has reiterated its "buy" recommendation on the stock and said it disagrees with the bearishness around Eternal. The brokerage revised its 12-month target price to INR 375 from INR 390 earlier, according to the report.

On the global front, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the trade deal between New Delhi and Washington, DC, has not been signed yet because Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not telephoned US President Donald Trump in time. Trump, meanwhile, said he had cancelled a previously planned second wave of attacks on Venezuela as Caracas is releasing large numbers of political prisoners in a sign of "peace" between the countries.

On its part, New Delhi extended the anti-dumping duty on imports of normal butanol or n-butyl alcohol from the US, European Union, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Africa till Jul. 12, the finance ministry said in a notification late Thursday.
