Ashok Leyland inaugurates CV plant in Lucknow to make electric buses

NEW DELHI - Ashok Leyland Ltd. Friday inaugurated a greenfield plant in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, to produce up to 5,000 electric buses annually. The plant was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises H.D. Kumaraswamy.
"This manufacturing plant reaffirms our resolve to help shape the future of India's commercial vehicle industry, and we are confident that it will make a strong contribution towards employment generation while advancing sustainable mobility," the company Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja said.
Ashok Leyland operates in the electric vehicle business through its subsidiary Switch Mobility Automotive Ltd. The company's India business achieved profitability at the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation level in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar).
The greenfield plant spans over 70 acres and has been built as a 'green facility'. "The new plant incorporates rooftop solar panels, energy-efficient LED lighting, battery-operated in-plant logistics, positive water balance initiatives, and a zero-discharge system, reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainable manufacturing," Ashok Leyland said in a statement.
Ashok Leyland currently has nine plants in India, located in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. While buses account for just 15% of its product portfolio, light commercial vehicles account for around 35%, and trucks for 50%.
For the September quarter, Ashok Leyland had reported a net profit of INR 7.71 billion on revenue of INR 95.88 billion. Friday, its shares closed 1.8% higher on the National Stock Exchange at INR 187.76. End
