NEW DELHI/MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s Dzire, a sedan, emerged as India's top-selling car in 2025, even as the industry sees increasing domination of sport utility vehicles, the company said. "The Dzire, which happens to be a sedan, is the outlier standing in front of so many SUVs (sport utility vehicles) in the market, even when SUV segment's share is going up," Partho Banerjee, Maruti Suzuki India's executive director and head of marketing and sales, told reporters in a virtual press conference Thursday.
"It only proves one point, that if you are able to make a good product, there are customers in the market who are going to buy it," Banerjee said. Maruti Suzuki India sold 214,000 units of the Dzire model in 2025. Its premium hatchback Baleno was the top-selling model across the industry in December, with 22,108 units sold.
Maruti Suzuki's wholesale sales in December grew 22% on year to 217,854 units. Sales of mini and compact segment cars grew 49% on year to 92,929 units, while those of utility vehicles grew 33% on year to 73,818 units. Just like wholesale sales, retail sales by Maruti Suzuki too hit an all-time record high of around 286,000 units in 2025.
Banerjee said Maruti Suzuki could keep up with the demand in December only because it held back the production of select models in order to fulfil demand for the mini car segment, which includes the Alto and S-Presso. "But that (holding back production of one segment over the other) is practically not possible for every month because other segments also have a huge waiting," Banerjee said. Currently, the company has a network stock of 2-3 days.
"What we believe is this: we need to do a balancing act, and we need to serve all sets of customers, so that it does not happen that we are only serving the higher-end vehicles. We are also trying to serve the customers who are trying to upgrade to a 4-wheeler," Banerjee said. Maruti Suzuki has pending bookings for one-and-a-half month.
Banerjee reiterated that demand for cars in India's top 100 cities has been good, but cities beyond these 100 have seen even better traction.
Multiple automobile companies, including Hyundai Motor India Ltd., have already announced a price hike, effective Thursday, to pass on the impact of input price pressures to customers. Banerjee said Maruti Suzuki is expected to take a call on this soon.
"Very soon we are going to take a call, but maybe we will be serving the customers who have worked with us till now to serve them maybe for another 15 days, 20 days. That thought process we are still contemplating, but very soon we will be announcing that (potential price hike)," Banerjee said.
Maruti Suzuki's newly launched mid-sized sport utility vehicle Victoris has received 70,000 bookings so far. Of this, the company has served around 35,000 bookings, and the balance bookings are pending. Retail sales of its Grand Vitara was around 24,000 units in December. "If you go to the network, you won't find Grand Vitaras in the market. We have a huge network....but stock is not there," Banerjee said.
For the September quarter, Maruti Suzuki had reported a net profit of INR 32.93 billion on revenue of INR 421.01 billion. On Thursday, shares of Maruti Suzuki India closed 0.1% higher at INR 16,708 on the National Stock Exchange. End
