NEW DELHI – Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. Thursday said it sold 50,519 vehicles in December, up 14% on year. Of these, 50,046 units were sold in the domestic market, a rise of 13% on year. The remaining 473 units were sold in the overseas market, up from 59 units in the corresponding month a year ago. The automobile major sold 6,906 electric vehicles at home and abroad in December, up over 24% on year, the data showed.
"CY25 (Jan-Dec) saw steady progress for the PV (passenger vehicle) industry powered by a growing preference for SUVs (sport utility vehicles) and accelerating adoption of cleaner, emission-friendly powertrains. For Tata Motors, it was the fifth consecutive year of record-breaking annual sales, with 587,218 units sold, including the highest-ever EV volumes of 81,125 units in a calendar year," said Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Shailesh Chandra.
In December, the company's dealer inventory was down to about 18 days, according to the press release.
Tata Motors PV clocked its highest-ever quarterly wholesale volume of 171,103 units in Oct-Dec, up over 22% on year. Of these, 168,616 units were sold in the domestic market, recording growth of nearly 21% on year. The company's international business sold 2,397 units in the December quarter, up from 405 units a year ago. Retail sales/registrations during the quarter crossed the 200,000 units mark for the first time, according to the press release.
"For Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, the momentum sparked by the rollout of GST 2.0 in late Q2 FY26 (Jul-Sept) gained further traction in Q3 (Oct-Dec), resulting in several new records," Chandra said. He added that Nexon, India's top-selling car/sport utility vehicle in October and November, was on track to retain the leadership for the December quarter with sales of about 64,000 units. In the compact SUV segment, Punch secured a lead and Tiago delivered robust growth in the hatchback category, according to the release.
Vehicles powered by compressed natural gas crossed the 47,000-mark in the December quarter and overall SUV volumes for Tata Motors PV rose 18% on year. "EV adoption accelerated significantly, supported by enhanced capabilities, longer range, lifetime battery warranty, and price parity with ICE (internal combustion engine) counterparts, translating to a robust 50% YoY (year-on-year) growth," Chandra said.
Chandra added that with deliveries of recently introduced products commencing in Jan-Mar and a pipeline of launches and innovations on the anvil, Tata Motors was well poised to accelerate its growth trajectory in FY26.
For the September quarter, the company had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 761.70 billion on revenue of INR 723.49 billion. The company had recorded a one-time gain of INR 826 billion following the demerger of its commercial vehicle operations. Shares of the company closed almost flat at INR 367.55 on the National Stock Exchange on Thursday. End
