End up led by banks, metals; Nifty 50 gains 10% in 2025

MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices ended higher Wednesday, snapping four-five sessions of decline. The Nifty 50 index ended the session 0.7% higher, bringing its year-to-date returns to 10.5%. Shares of banks, oil and gas, and metals companies helped lift the 50-stock index.
"Market ended the 2025 on a strong note, posting a broad-based recovery," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note. "Looking ahead, expectations are rising for a constructive rebound in 2026, supported by improving demand conditions," he added.
The Nifty 50 settled at 26129.60, up 190.75 points. The BSE Sensex closed up 0.6% at 85220.60 points, up 545.52 points. The 50-stock index closed above its psychologically crucial level of 26000 points after facing strong resistance in the previous two sessions. The index is just 196 points from its historical high of 26,325.80. India VIX, the fear gauge of Dalal Street, ended 2.1% lower at 9.4750.
Broader market indices outperformed benchmarks during the session, after remaining in the negative territory for the previous 4–5 sessions. The small-cap indices closed 1% higher and snapped a three-day losing streak. The mid-cap indices ended 1.0–1.1% higher.
Barring the Nifty IT, most sectoral indices outperformed the benchmark, ending 0.7-2.7% higher. Nifty IT closed 0.3% lower. The Nifty Oil & Gas index, which ended 2.7% higher, was the top gainer among the sectoral indices. All the constituents of the Nifty Oil & Gas ended higher. The Nifty IT closed lower for the sixth consecutive session, shedding 4% over the period.
Most of the constituents of the Nifty Metal index ended the session higher. JSW Steel and Tata Steel led the gains in the Nifty 50 index. Shares of JSW Steel ended nearly 5% higher, making them the top gainer in the Nifty 50 index. Shares of Tata Steel ended over 2% higher. The Nifty Metal index closed over 1% higher at 11167.65 points.
Shares of financial services companies were up, with the Nifty Financial Services index ending nearly 1% higher at 27613.30. Kotak Mahindra Bank ended over 2% higher after falling for the previous two sessions. Heavyweight Reliance Industries ended 2% higher, aiding the Nifty 50 index to close higher.
The Nifty IT was down with most of its constituents ending in the red. Tata Consultancy Services was the worst hit, closing over 1% lower. Shares of Vodafone Idea ended nearly 11% lower after the Cabinet reportedly approved a five-year moratorium on repayment of its adjusted gross revenue dues to the telecom department and froze the AGR dues at INR 876.95 billion.
