MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices failed to hold on to their initial gains and closed lower Monday amid profit taking, with the Nifty 50 index down for the third session in a row. A fall in information technology, financial services, and oil and gas stocks dragged the 50-stock index down.

The Nifty 50 settled at 25942.10 points, down over 100 points or 0.4%. The BSE Sensex closed at 84695.54 points, down nearly 350 points or 0.4%. The 50-stock index closed below its psychologically crucial level of 26000 points. "The market appears short on catalysts for further upside, with investors largely in holiday mode, signalling a potential consolidation phase in the near term," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.

The rupee ended lower against the dollar as banks bought the greenback on behalf of oil-marketing companies and Indian corporations, dealers said. The volume in the foreign exchange market was lower than usual with many participants on year-end holidays, they said. The rupee ended at 89.9750 a dollar.

All the broader equity indices closed lower. The small-cap indices closed 0.5-1.0% lower and the mid-cap indices closed 0.4-0.5% lower. All the small-cap indices closed down for the second session while the mid-cap indices, barring the Nifty Midcap 50, ended down for the third session in a row. Most of the sectoral indices ended in the red, with the Nifty Consumer Durables down almost 1%. The Nifty IT closed lower for the fourth session running. The Nifty Metal index also ended slightly lower at 10789.10 points, ending a seven-day rise.

Metal stocks such as Vedanta and Hindustan Zinc gave up their initial gains to close 1.3-3.0% lower after the price of silver declined as much as 8% from its record high on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India. Shares of Vedanta fell after notching a record high at INR 616. The stock snapped a winning streak of 13 consecutive days, during which period it had gained over 17%. Hindustan Zinc snapped a four-day rise.

IT stocks ended the session lower, with the Nifty IT ending nearly 1% lower at 38282.70 points. Barring Tech Mahindra and Coforge, all the other constituents of the sectoral index ended 0.7-1.8% lower.

Shares of financial services companies such as Bajaj Finserv, Shriram Finance, and Bajaj Finance ended 0.2-0.5% lower. The Nifty Financial Services index ended 0.3% lower at 27363.50 points, closing down for the third day in succession.

Index heavyweights Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank also dragged the 50-stock index down, closing 0.5-0.9% lower. Tata Steel was the top gainer in the Nifty 50, closing almost 2% higher. It was followed by Tata Consumer Products, which ended 1.7% higher. Both stocks gained after having closed lower for the previous two trading sessions.
