Domestic air passenger traffic up 7% YoY at 15.24 mln in Nov

MUMBAI – Domestic airlines flew 15.24 million passengers in November, nearly 7% higher than in the same period last year, data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation late Friday showed. Till November so far this year, domestic airlines had carried 152.64 million passengers, up over 4% on year.
InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo airline lost a small part of its market share in November but remained the top domestic player, with a market share of 63.6%, down marginally from 65.6% in October. The no-frills airline had carried 9.69 million passengers in September, up over 5% from the previous month. Its passenger load factor was 88.7% in November, up from 82.4% in October.
The Air India group, which includes Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express, saw a marginal rise in market share to 26.7% in November from 25.7% in October. The carrier carried 4.08 million passengers in November, higher than the 3.60 million passengers it had carried in October. The Air India group's passenger load factor rose to 87.5% in November from 77.3% in the previous month.
Akasa Air's market share fell to 4.7% in November from 5.2% in October. The airline flew 723,000 passengers in November, nearly unchanged from passengers flown in the prior month. Its passenger load factor, however, rose slightly to 93.8% in November from 91.2% in October. The Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet Ltd. saw a slight increase in its market share to 3.7% in November from 2.6% in October. The airline flew 567,000 passengers in November, up from 362,000 in October. Its passenger load factor was 87.7% in November, up from 82.2% in October.
The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for November was 1.3%, according to the DGCA's report. The cancellation rate was 1.3% for SpiceJet, 1.57% for IndiGo, 0.7% for the Air India group, and 0.46% for Akasa Air. The top three reasons for flight cancellations in November were miscellaneous issues, technical concerns, and operational matters, according to the report.
During November, a total of 1,196 passenger complaints were received by scheduled domestic airlines. The number of complaints carried for the month per 10,000 passengers was about 0.78, as per the DGCA report. During the month, Akasa Air registered the best on-time performance at 72.2%, followed by Air India and IndiGo at 69.1% and 69%, respectively. SpiceJet's on-time performance for the month was at 48.4%. The DGCA calculates the on-time performance of scheduled domestic airlines at six metro airports – Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
On Friday, shares of InterGlobe Aviation closed marginally lower at INR 5,074 on the National Stock Exchange. Shares of SpiceJet ended almost 2% lower at INR 30.54 on BSE. End
