HYDERABAD - Airports operator and developer GMR Airports Ltd. has qualified to submit its bid for the $800-million new Taif International Airport project in Saudi Arabia, a source with knowledge of the development told Informist.
"The value of the project is tentative for now and the final value may be announced once the technical and financial bids will begin," the source said.
Saudi Arabia, through its agencies, had called pre-qualification bids for the development of the new international airport which is estimated to have passenger handling capacity of 2.5 million a year. The Saudi government is also planning to develop this airport as a cargo hub in West Asia.
The new airport project is being led by Matarat Holding, the national airport operator, in collaboration with the National Center for Privatisation and Public-Private Partnership, a government agency. The National Center for Privatisation and PPP is overseeing the process of public-private partnership process for the airport under a Build-Transfer-Operate model spanning 30 years.
GMR Airports is the only independent company which qualified for the bidding, while four other consortiums also were found eligibile to participate in the bidding, the source mentioned above said. These consortiums are Bengaluru International Airport Ltd.–Tamasuk consortium, Turkey's TAV Airports–Mada International Holding consortium, the Irish company Daa International-led consortium, and Kalyon Insaat consortium. At lease 90 infrastructure companies across the globe expressed their interest to bid for the project, according to the National Center for Privatisation and PPP.
GMR Airports has developed major airports including Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, Manohar International Airport in Goa, Bidar Airport in Karnataka, and Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia, and operates them as well. It also provides technical services at Mactan Cebu International Airport in the Philippines. The company is currently developing a greenfield airport in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh.
