--Stichting Frisse files case against Tata Steel's 2 arms in Netherlands

HYDERABAD - Tata Steel Ltd. has said that a Dutch non-profit foundation, Stichting Frisse Wind, has filed a collective action lawsuit against two of its subsidiaries - Tata Steel Nederland B.V. and Tata Steel IJmuiden B.V. — in the Netherlands, alleging harm caused by emissions from the company's operations in the IJmuiden region.

Stichting Frisse, working towards health and environment protection in the region, has sought compensation of around 1.4 billion euros (around INR 147 billion), claiming that emission of harmful substances have led to increased health risks for residents and a decline in property values in the surrounding areas. The case has been filed under the Dutch Act on Collective Settlement of Mass Claims and will first require court certification before proceeding further.

Tata Steel Netherlands has said Stichting Frisse has provided no supporting evidence for the claims, making it unsubstantiated and speculative, and added that it will contest the case vigorously. The company has also highlighted its ongoing efforts to reduce emissions through its Roadmap+ and Green Steel initiatives aimed at improving air quality and environmental performance in the region. The class action suit is financed by Redbreast Associates N.V. and Omni Bridgeway S.A, both of which are third-party funders, the company said.

Tata Steel said Stichting Frisse has considerable challenges regarding both admissibility and the merits of its case. The company has identified substantial grounds for its defence, Tata Steel said.

For the quarter ended September, Tata Steel reported a consolidated net profit of INR 31.02 billion on a revenue of INR 586.89 billion. On Wednesday, the company's shares closed nearly 0.5% lower at INR 170.07 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
