HYDERABAD – The Water Resources Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh has granted a no-objection certificate to Vedanta Ltd. for 20 onshore wells, a senior state government official told Informist. The no-objection certificate is a preliminary requirement for the company to obtain further approvals to undertake oil and gas exploration in its onshore fields in the state's Krishna district.
In April, Vedanta had applied for the state irrigation department's approval to develop these onshore wells, which were allotted to the company under the Discovered Small Field Policy, 2018. The wells are located in the Machilipatnam division of Krishna district. Since the Bandar canal passes through the allotted block, it was mandatory to obtain permission from the state's Water Resources Department for the development of these wells, the official said.
While Vedanta has applied for the state government's approval for 35 wells, the Water Resources Department approved only 20 wells that are at least 500 metres away from canals and water bodies. The state government has asked the company to change the location of the remaining 15 wells, which were identified as being in proximity to irrigation canals, drainage systems, and water bodies, the official said.
The official added that the no-objection certificate issued to Vedanta by the state government is only from an irrigation regulation point of view, and said the company will have to go through all other regulatory approval processes before beginning well development work.
At 1224 IST, Vedanta's shares traded at INR 599.05 on the National Stock Exchange, over 2% higher from its previous close. End
