MUMBAI – Shares of pharmaceutical companies will be in focus next week as analysts will keenly watch ongoing developments in the sector, such as licensing deals, product launches, and key policy developments in the US, which are likely to boost the sentiment in the coming week. Analysts were bullish on the medium-to-long-term prospects of Indian pharmaceutical companies, as generic drug makers are expected to perform well in a seasonally strong Oct-Dec quarter, while companies focussed on contract development and manufacturing organisations, or CDMOs, are expected to benefit from the upcoming US Biosecure Act.

The Nifty Pharma index closed at 22751.25 points Friday, up almost 1%, triggered by US President Donald Trump signing the much-awaited Biosecure Act. "Nifty Pharma index will likely consolidate around 22000–23000 points," said Anshul Jain, technical analyst at Laxmishree Investments and Securities.

Recently, Dr. Reddy's Ltd., through its subsidiary Dr. Reddy's Laboratories SA, signed an in-licensing agreement with Australia-based Immutep Ltd. to develop and commercialise cancer drug Eftilagimod Alfa in all countries except North America, Europe, Japan, and China. Among other such global deals, Cipla Ltd. said it had entered into an agreement with Pfizer Ltd. and Pfizer Products India Pvt. Ltd. to market, distribute, and sell four products of Pfizer in India for five years. These products are cough syrup Corex, anti-inflammatory drug Dolonex, proton pump inhibitor Neksium, and antibiotic medicine Dalacin C.

Analysts expect generic companies to continue performing well. However, they also see a lot of competition within the sector. Bigger companies such as Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Cipla are expected to perform well, given their head start in producing the popular glucagon-like peptide-1 drugs used to treat diabetes, Deepika Murarka, pharmaceutical research analyst at Choice Broking, said. Chronic therapies will also maintain their lead over acute therapies, the analyst said.

While product approvals, launches and marketing deals are creating a positive momentum, increased red flags by the US Food and Drug Organisation by issuing Form-483s is a cause for concern, which may hurt some pharma majors' ability to cope up with the upcoming opportunities, analysts said.

Analysts are bullish on CDMO companies after US President Donald Trump signed the 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) National Defence Authorisation Act, which includes the Biosecure Act. into law. Brokerages have said this legislation will accelerate growth for Indian CDMO players as US companies try to reduce drug production dependency on China. However, analysts have said that these benefits are likely to accrue in the medium term since these companies will have to go through regulatory approval in the US. Piramal Pharma, Divis Laboratories, and Laurus Labs look poised for gains in the future, according to analysts.

Divi's Laboratories is the front-runner, in terms of capacity creation, to benefit from the US Biosecure Act owing to its history of strong regulatory clearances and purification capabilities. "It does force our clients to think about Plan B," Nandini Piramal, Piramal Pharma chairperson, told CNBC-TV18. "China is cheaper and faster. But at the board level, people are thinking about risk. They are thinking about when I should be manufacturing," she said.
