MUMBAI – Indian mills produced 7.8 million tonnes of sugar between Oct. 1 and Dec. 15, 28% higher than the year-ago period, the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association said in a press release Tuesday. A total of 478 mills were operational across the country as of Monday, up from 477 a year ago, the association said.

According to the industry body, mills in Maharashtra--the top manufacturer of sugar--produced 3.2 million tonnes of the commodity, compared with 1.7 million tonnes a year ago. The output of mills in Uttar Pradesh, the second-largest sugar producer, was 2.5 million tonnes, up 6.6% from a year ago.

Sugar production in Karnataka rose 14% on year to 1.6 million tonnes during the same period. Field-level assessments indicate better sugarcane yields and improved sugar recovery rates across key states as crushing operations gain momentum, the association said.

However, in the Oct. 1-Dec. 15 period, mills in Tamil Nadu produced 50,000 tonnes of sugar, down over 33% on year, while Gujarat produced 182,000 tonnes, up from 180,000 tonnes. Mills in other states produced 378,000 tonnes of sugar as of Monday, down from 506,000 tonnes a year ago. Other sugar-producing states in the country are Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, current ex-mill sugar prices in major producing states have fallen significantly below the cost of production. Prices are currently hovering around INR 3,600–INR 3,660 per 100 kg in Maharashtra. In this backdrop, an immediate revision of the minimum selling price of sugar, aligned with the increased cost of production, has become imperative, the association said. Such a revision would restore financial viability to the sector and ensure timely payments to sugarcane farmers, it added.  End
