NEW DELHI – Total domestic despatches of automobiles in November grew 21% on year to 2.37 million units on the back of robust strength in all segments, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Friday. Passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers registered all-time high sales for November. Given the strong demand sentiment for automobiles overseas as well as on the domestic front, auto companies amped up production last month to a large extent.

Wholesale sales of two-wheelers in India grew over 21% on year to 1.94 million units, while their exports grew at a faster 30% on year to 471,012 units. Motorcycles, which form the bulk of two-wheelers sold in India, registered despatches totalling 1.16 million units in November, up 18% on year, while scooter sales grew 29% on year to 735,753 units.

Despite the festival season largely closing out in November, companies increased two-wheeler production to 2.39 million units, up 21% on year, in a bid to keep up with the huge upswing in demand post the cut in goods and services tax. Retail sales of two-wheelers in November had contracted due to supply snags.

Companies despatched 412,405 passenger vehicles to dealerships in India last month, up nearly 19% on year. Domestic sales of passenger cars grew 16% on year to 112,612 units and those of utility vehicles grew 19% to 229,157 units. Exports of passenger vehicles inched up 40% on year at 84,646 units in November. Production of passenger vehicles grew 23% on year to 431,718 units.

Wholesale sales of three-wheelers in India grew 21% on year to 71,999 units, mainly driven by strength in sales of passenger carriers. Exports of this segment nearly doubled to 46,013 units in November from 23,439 a year ago. Given the robust demand, companies increased production of three-wheelers by 55% on-year to 119,646 units, with a notable rise in the output of passenger carriers.

Overall, production of all automobiles increased 22% on year to 2.94 million units in November. "Industry is optimistic that the continued supportive policy reforms and improved market sentiments would continue this growth trajectory well into 2026," SIAM's Director General Rajesh Menon said in a press release.

APR-NOV PERFORMANCE

Even as offtake picked up in November, domestic despatches this financial year so far have shown a modest growth. Companies sold 17.75 million automobile units in Apr-Nov, only 3% higher on year. However, exports in this period grew a rapid 25% on year to 4.24 million units. Automakers manufactured 21.76 million automobiles in Apr-Nov, 6.5% higher on year.

Wholesale sales of two-wheelers in Apr-Nov mirrored the overall auto sales, as despatches grew 3% on year to 14.39 million units. Sales growth was limited by flattish performance in sales of motorcycles, but was supported by robust demand for scooters. Exports of two-wheelers grew 24% on year to 3.33 million units. Overseas, motorcycles outperformed scooters.

Passenger vehicle despatches in India in Apr-Nov grew 3% on year to 2.81 million units, with demand for passenger cars contracting mildly. Exports of passenger vehicles grew 20% on year to 599,268 units. Domestic three-wheeler despatches grew 7% on year to 547,737 units while their exports grew 51% on year to 307,155 units.

Data for sales of passenger vehicles does not include data from BMW, Mercedes, Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo Auto, SIAM said.
