NEW DELHI - The delegation of US trade officials, led by Deputy US Trade Representative Rick Switzer, concludes its visit to New Delhi Thursday, a government official said. There has been no indication so far of any extension of their visit, nor of any meeting between Switzer and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, the official added.

Switzer's team met Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and India's chief negotiator for the Bilateral Trade Agreement, Darpan Jain, joint secretary at the commerce ministry. Switzer also met and discussed bilateral ties with India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

The commerce ministry is likely to release a statement later Thursday detailing the progress on discussions between the two countries on the Bilateral Trade Agreement during the latest visit. This is the second visit by officials from the US for trade deal negotiations after the White House imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods in August.

While the two sides had set the target to conclude a tranche of the agreement by the fall of 2025, it is yet to be seen if an announcement comes this month. Meanwhile, Goyal has reiterated several times that his team would not negotiate any trade deal under the pressure of a timeline.

Indian exporters, however, hope for a timely conclusion as they expect that the tariffs will be lowered under the trade deal. With exports worth $86.5 billion to the US, the nation was India's top export destination in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). But after the tariff levy in August, India's exports to the US have fallen in the successive two months, according to the latest available data.  End
