NEW DELHI – Trade officials from New Zealand will hold a meeting with the commerce ministry on Friday to finalise a trade deal between the two countries, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said Thursday at an event in Mumbai.

"Monday-Tuesday I'm negotiating with European Commissioner, Wednesday with the US team, today (Thursday) I've Italian deputy PM...tomorrow (Friday) New Zealand minister is coming to finalise the trade deal," he said. "Yesterday we got the good news of conclusion of a free trade agreement which will be annouced soon," Goyal added.

In November, Goyal held a meeting with New Zealand's Minister for Trade Todd McClay to discuss the proposed India–New Zealand free trade agreement. "Both sides acknowledged that the recent round resulted in substantive progress, with closure achieved on several elements and a clear shared understanding emerging on pathways to an early and mutually satisfactory conclusion of the agreement," a government release had said.

The fourth round of negotiations between India and New Zealand had concluded in Auckland and Rotorua on Nov. 8. New Zealand and India restarted talks on a free trade agreement in March, a decade after the first round of negotiations fell through. The two countries began working on the agreement in April 2010, but the talks got stalled in February 2015 due to disagreements over market access and trade priorities.  End
