MUMBAI – Cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail in parts of central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Telangana, north interior Karnataka, and north interior Odisha from Thursday to Saturday under the influence of subtropical westerly jet stream, the India Meteorological Department said.

The subtropical westerly jet stream is a high-velocity westerly wind belt that contributes to cool and dry weather. Similar conditions are also likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh from Thursday and Friday, the department said.

The presence of a feeble western disturbance is likely to cause light rainfall or snowfall in parts of the Western Himalayan region, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad from Saturday to Tuesday, and over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, the weather department said.

Dense fog conditions are likely during the morning hours over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from Thursday to Monday, over Himachal Pradesh and northeast Uttar Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday. Similar weather conditions are likely over Uttarakhand and Odisha on Thursday and Friday, and over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from Saturday to Tuesday.

No significant change in the minimum temperature is likely over the plains of northwest India during the next two days, after which a rise of 2–4 degrees Celcius is expected in the subsequent three days, the department said. In central India, no significant change is expected in minimum temperatures for the next two days and a rise of 2–3 degrees Celcius is expected thereafter for the subsequent three days.

A gradual fall of 2–3 degrees Celcius in minimum temperature is very likely over Maharashtra for the next three days and thereafter a rise of 2–3 degrees Celcius is expected. No significant change in temperature over Gujarat, east and northeast India is expected during the next seven days, the department said.  End
