MUMBAI – The benchmark indices fell for the second session in a row Tuesday, mirroring weakness across global markets ahead of the US Federal Open Market Committee's policy decision. Information technology stocks were the worst hit. Indices were volatile throughout the session due to expiry of the weekly derivatives contracts. Derivatives analysts said there was buildup of bearish positions in the options chain of Nifty 50, which kept the market in the red throughout the session.
The Nifty 50 closed at 25839.65 points, down 120.90 points or 0.5%. The 50-stock index closed below its crucial support of 25900 points. Technical analysts had said it is important for the index to sustain these levels as a breach would drag the index down further. The BSE Sensex closed at 84666.28 points, down 436.41 points or 0.5%. On the other hand, all the broader market indices recovered from an intraday fall and closed higher. Small-cap indices fared better than their mid-cap peers. Though mid- and small-cap companies are showing potential for earnings growth in the coming quarters and some may see re-rating, analysts are still concerned about valuations.
Analysts said traders added short positions in the derivatives chain of the Nifty 50 constituents throughout the session. Some analysts said they do not expect investors to cover their short positions in the near term. Traders added short positions near 25900-25800 in the options chain of the Nifty 50, said Ashish Sherigar, technical and derivatives analyst at NVS Brokerage. This indicates that the overall market sentiment is bearish. He said short-covering will take place only if the Nifty 50 closes above 25950 points in the coming sessions. Sherigar said traders have added short positions in 23 stocks of the Nifty 50, indicating weakness in the 50-stock index which under-performed the broader market indices.
Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, which operates the low-cost airline IndiGo, closed around 1% higher, recovering sharply towards the end of the session after the airline's chief executive officer said operations have stabilised completely as of Tuesday. The stock closed higher after seven consecutive sessions, falling 18% in this period. "...flights reflecting on our website are scheduled to operate with an adjusted network," Pieter Elbers, chief executive officer of IndiGo, said in a post on the airline's handle on social media platform X. The company had earlier said it expects operations to normalise between Wednesday and Monday.
Eternal snapped a five-day fall to close 2.3% higher and was the top Nifty 50 gainer. On Monday, the stock had fallen after a large deal of over 52 million shares or 0.5% stake was executed on the National Stock Exchange at a discount. The total transaction was for over INR 15 billion.
Titan Co. closed 2.2% higher at INR 3,849 and was the second best performer among Nifty 50 constituents. The company will perform better in Oct-Mar due to rise in jewellery demand and new product launches, Ajoy Chawla, chief executive officer of the company's jewellery division, said.
Asian Paints closed 4.5% lower and was the worst-hit constituent of the Nifty 50 index. The stock fell over concerns about expensive valuation and weak demand outlook. Analysts remain cautious about the company's value growth in the December quarter and expect the growth in volumes to be at levels similar to the September quarter.
Among the sectoral indices, those pertaining to consumer durables, state-owned banks, and real estate closed higher. The Nifty Consumer Durables index closed 1.3% higher, largely due to sharp gains in shares of PG Electroplast, Bata India, and Amber Enterprises.
PG Electroplast closed over 5% higher after the company clarified that the claims of HDFC Sky Platform about the financial health of the company were false. On Friday, HDFC Sky Platform flagged concerns about the company's rising leverage, weakening cash flows, and growing debt. However, PG Electroplast clarified that it was a "net cash" company. As of Sept. 30, the company's net cash stood at INR 6.30 billion, as per the company's balance sheet.
Shares of most steel companies closed lower for the second session in a row as fall in domestic hot-rolled coil prices and concern over rising exports from China in the global market weighed on the sentiment. Rising Chinese steel exports could exert downward pressure on domestic prices, especially after the lapse of the provisional safeguard duty in November, ICICI Securities said in a report. Brokerages also said that domestic steel prices were at a 52-week low amid sluggish demand. Shares of steel majors Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and Hindalco Industries closed 1-2% lower.
Shares of information technology companies came under selling pressure ahead of the outcome of the US Fed policy meeting. Barring Oracle Financial Services Software, all the other Nifty IT constituents closed lower. Wipro, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, and Coforge closed 2-4% lower.
Rice exporting companies traded lower after US President Donald Trump warned of tariffs against imports from India. This development comes amid the ongoing trade talks between the US and India. LT Foods closed around 1% lower. However, KRBL recovered and closed 3.1% higher.
