--IndiGo CEO: Operations fully stabilised as of Tuesday
--IndiGo CEO: Started focus internally on what led to disruptions
MUMBAI – InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s low-cost carrier IndiGo's Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers said the airline's operations have been stabilised completely as of Tuesday. "...flights reflecting on our website are scheduled to operate with an adjusted network," Elbers said in a post on IndiGo's handle on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The company had earlier said it expects to normalise its operations between Dec. 10 and Dec. 15.
"We've let you down when a major operational disruption happened, and we're sorry for that," Elbers said. "...thousands of you could not travel and we are profusely apologetic about that." From operating just 700 flights Friday, IndiGo is operating more than 1,800 flights Tuesday, the chief executive officer said. This, however, is still lower than around 2,200 flights that the airline operated on a daily basis before the disruption.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has directed the airline to reduce its flight schedule by 5?ter it failed to show its ability to operate the winter schedule. This means IndiGo will be allowed to operate 14,263 flights per week against the approved schedule of 15,014 departures. IndiGo has to submit its revised schedule by 1700 IST Wednesday.
"Now that the immediate crisis is dealt with, we (have) started to focus internally on what has led to this, lessons to be drawn, and how to emerge stronger from this," Elbers said. His comments come after the airline's latest operational crisis following its failure to properly implement the aviation regulator's flight duty time limitation norms. As a result, the airline saw a shortage of pilots, which resulted in the cancellation of thousands of flights over the past week.
The budget carrier has around 65% market share of Indian domestic aviation and the disruption in its operations forced the aviation regulator to temporarily withdraw the pilot rest norms, though airlines were intimated about the regulations more than a year ago. While the aviation ministry and the regulator have not yet imposed any penalty on IndiGo, analysts and credit rating agencies expect them to do so in the near term.
Following the chief executive officer's comments, shares of InterGlobe Aviation recovered and ended almost 1% higher at INR 4,967.50 on the National Stock Exchange. The stock had fallen almost 17% in the past seven sessions, thanks to the operational disruptions. For the September quarter, the company had reported a net loss of INR 26.14 billion on a revenue of INR 185.55 billion. End
