Banks' gross NPAs fall to INR 4.18 tln as of Sept. 30 from INR 8.35 tln FY21

NEW DELHI – The gross non-performing assets of banks have nearly halved over the last five years with the gross NPAs as a percentage of gross loans seeing a sharp improvement. Banks had gross NPAs worth INR 4.18 trillion as of Sept. 30, lower than INR 4.32 trillion at the end of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and INR 8.35 trillion at the end of FY21, according to Reserve Bank of India data shared by the Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday.
Banks' gross NPAs as a percentage of gross loans fell to 2.05% as of Sept. 30 from 2.22% at end-FY25 and 7.33% at end-FY21. Public sector banks had 12.89 million NPA accounts as of Mar. 31, while private sector banks had 10.45 million such accounts. The information on number of gross NPA accounts is collected from banks on an annual basis at the end of March. End
