MUMBAI – Under the influence of subtropical westerly jet streams over the plains of north India, cold wave conditions are likely over parts of Punjab, west Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, central Maharashtra, north interior Karnataka, and Telangana from Wednesday to Friday, over Vidarbha on Wednesday, and over Haryana and Marathwada on Thursday and Friday, the India Meteorological Department said.
The subtropical westerly jet stream is a high-velocity westerly wind belt which contributes to cool and dry weather. This weather system is also likely to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall over parts of the western Himalayan region from Saturday, the weather department said.
The weather bureau has warned of dense fog conditions during the morning hours in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, in Odisha on Wednesday and Thursday, east Uttar Pradesh from Wednesday to Saturday, and in Assam and Manipur from Wednesday to Sunday.
In the last 24 hours, minimum temperatures in most parts of northwest India dipped below 5 degrees Celsius, while they remained in the range of 5-10 degrees Celsius in some parts of northwest and central India. Adampur in Punjab recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 2.8 degrees Celsius, the department said.
A gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2 degrees Celsius is likely over the plains of northwest India in the next three days, after which a rise by 2–4 degrees Celsius is seen in the subsequent four days, the weather department said. In central India, no significant change in minimum temperature is seen in the next three days, and thereafter a rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected in the subsequent four days.
In Maharashtra, a gradual fall in minimum temperature by 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected over the next four days, the department said. No major change in minimum temperature is likely over the rest of the country in the next seven days, it said. End
