MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops across India touched 48.0 million hectares as of Friday, up over 6% from about 45.1 million hectares a year ago, according to a release from the agriculture ministry Monday. The acreage under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, stood at 24.1 million hectares, up nearly 11% from 21.8 million hectares in the corresponding period a year ago. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.

 

The acreage under paddy was 1.1 million hectares, an increase of over 11% from 986,000 hectares last year. The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, stood at 3.60 million hectares, against 3.59 million hectares a year ago.

 

Within coarse cereals, acreage under jowar, or sorghum, fell about 2.6% to 1.8 million hectares from 1.9 million hectares a year ago while maize acreage was up at 1.14 million hectares from 1.11 million hectares. Acreage under ragi, a millet, rose 39% to 64,000 hectares from 46,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown with pulses in the rabi season of crop year 2025–26 (Jul-Jun) as of Friday was 10.62 million hectares, almost unchanged from 10.57 million hectares a year ago. Among key pulses, chana acreage rose 3.6% to 7.8 million hectares from 7.5 million hectares a year ago while that of masur fell over 7% to 1.3 million hectares from 1.4 million hectares. Acreage under urad rose to 184,000 hectares from 167,000 hectares a year ago while that under moong fell to 23,000 hectares from 31,000 hectares.

 

The total area under oilseeds was 8.4 million hectares, up 3% from 8.2 million hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage fell about 22% to 180,000 hectares from 230,000 hectares, while acreage under mustard, the largest winter oilseed, rose about 4.5% to 8.0 million hectares from 7.6 million hectares a year ago. Sunflower acreage increased 23% to 32,000 hectares from 26,000 hectares, according to the report.
